Falling and rising factorials

Summary

The falling factorial xn‾x^{\underline{n}} multiplies nn consecutive factors going down from xx, and the rising factorial xn‾x^{\overline{n}} multiplies nn consecutive factors going up from xx. Both are polynomials of degree nn in xx, and both reduce to the factorial n!n! for a suitable choice of xx. The falling factorial counts ordered selections without repetition, and the rising factorial (the Pochhammer symbol of special functions) appears in hypergeometric series. The node falling factorial treats the falling case alone.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
