Definition

Let xx be an element of a commutative ring with identity, for example a real number, and let nn be a natural number. The falling factorial of xx of order nn is xn‾=x(x−1)(x−2)⋯(x−n+1)=∏i=0n−1(x−i).x^{\underline{n}} = x (x - 1) (x - 2) \cdots (x - n + 1) = \prod_{i=0}^{n-1} (x - i). The rising factorial of xx of order nn is xn‾=x(x+1)(x+2)⋯(x+n−1)=∏i=0n−1(x+i).x^{\overline{n}} = x (x + 1) (x + 2) \cdots (x + n - 1) = \prod_{i=0}^{n-1} (x + i). For n=0n = 0 both products are empty, and x0‾=x0‾=1x^{\underline{0}} = x^{\overline{0}} = 1.

Remarks

Example: for x=4x = 4 and n=2n = 2, 42‾=4⋅3=124^{\underline{2}} = 4 \cdot 3 = 12 and 42‾=4⋅5=204^{\overline{2}} = 4 \cdot 5 = 20. Non-example: the product 4⋅2=84 \cdot 2 = 8 is not 42‾4^{\underline{2}}, because its factors do not decrease by steps of 11. For a natural number m≥nm \ge n, mn‾=m!/(m−n)!m^{\underline{n}} = m!/(m-n)!, and mn‾=0m^{\underline{n}} = 0 when n>mn > m; see falling factorial and factorial. For a natural number m≥1m \ge 1, mn‾=(m+n−1)!/(m−1)!m^{\overline{n}} = (m + n - 1)!/(m - 1)!, and 1n‾=nn‾=n!1^{\overline{n}} = n^{\underline{n}} = n!. The two are linked by xn‾=(x+n−1)n‾=(−1)n(−x)n‾x^{\overline{n}} = (x + n - 1)^{\underline{n}} = (-1)^n (-x)^{\underline{n}}. For real x>0x > 0, xn‾=Γ(x+n)/Γ(x)x^{\overline{n}} = \Gamma(x + n)/\Gamma(x), where Γ\Gamma is the gamma function. Other notations: (x)n(x)_n is used for the falling factorial in combinatorics and for the rising factorial (the Pochhammer symbol) in special functions; the rising factorial is also written x(n)x^{(n)}. The q-Pochhammer symbol is a qq-analogue of the rising factorial.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
