Definition
Let be a rational function of degree at least on the Riemann sphere . Let be its -th iterate. A point belongs to the Fatou set if the following holds. There is an open neighbourhood of such that is a normal family. Normality refers to maps into with the spherical metric. So every sequence in the family has a subsequence that converges locally uniformly on , possibly to the constant . A connected component of is a Fatou component.
Remarks
By definition is open. Example: for , the open unit disc lies in , since there locally uniformly. Non-example: is not in ; every neighbourhood of contains points tending to and points tending to , so no subsequence of iterates has a continuous limit there. The Fatou set is completely invariant: if and only if . The same definition with in place of is used for transcendental entire functions.
