FBI transform
Builds on Integrable functionWave front set
Definition
Let and let be integrable. The FBI transform of is the function on given by The same formula, read as a pairing, defines for a distribution with compact support.
Remarks
The factor is a Gaussian window centred at of width of order , and selects the frequency . Authors use different normalizations of the window and of the constant in front; the qualitative properties do not depend on these choices. The main property concerns the analytic wave front set. Cut off near a point , and let . Then lies outside the analytic wave front set of exactly when decays like as . Here is a constant and the bound is uniform for near .
Example: and . For the exponent is a quadratic polynomial in . The Gaussian integral gives whose modulus is ; it decays like as , as it must for a real analytic function.
Non-example: is not integrable, and the integral defining diverges for every , because grows faster than any Gaussian decays.
