Fermi–Dirac integral
Builds on Gamma functionPolylogarithm
Definition
Let be a real number and let be the gamma function. The complete Fermi–Dirac integral of index is the function given by
Remarks
The integral converges for : near the integrand is bounded by , and for large it decays like .
For , expanding and integrating term by term gives where is the polylogarithm, and the identity holds for all real by analytic continuation. It also gives for .
Example: for , , which matches .
Non-example: for the integrand behaves like near , so the integral diverges; this is why is required, and is defined instead through the polylogarithm form.
Some authors omit the factor ; the normalized version above is the one with as .
