Field of extremals

Definition
Let be a function on , with integral functional . Let be a simply connected open set. A field of extremals of on is a family of functions , with in an open interval , such that:
- for each , the function solves the Euler–Lagrange equation of ;
- through each point passes exactly one curve of the family;
- the parameter of that curve is a continuously differentiable function on .
The slope function of the field is . An extremal is embedded in the field if for some .
Remarks
Example: for the extremals are straight lines. The family , , is a field on , with and slope function .
Non-example: the family , , of lines through the origin is not a field on . All its curves pass through , and no curve passes through the points with . On the half-plane it is a field, with ; it is then a central field, whose curves all start at one point on the boundary.
Let an extremal on satisfy along it, with no point conjugate to in . Then it can be embedded in a field on a neighbourhood of its graph.
