Definition

Let 𝐀\mathbf{A} be an algebra with universe AA. For XβŠ†AX \subseteq A, let Sg⁑(X)\operatorname{Sg}(X) denote the subuniverse generated by XX. It is the smallest subset of AA that contains XX and is closed under all fundamental operations of 𝐀\mathbf{A}. The algebra 𝐀\mathbf{A} is finitely generated when there is a finite set XβŠ†AX \subseteq A with Sg⁑(X)=A\operatorname{Sg}(X) = A.

Remarks

Example: the group (β„€,+,βˆ’,0)(\Z, +, -, 0) is finitely generated. Indeed Sg⁑({1})\operatorname{Sg}(\set{1}) contains 00, all sums 1+β‹―+11 + \cdots + 1, and their negatives, so it is all of β„€\Z.

Non-example: the group (β„š,+,βˆ’,0)(\Q, +, -, 0) is not finitely generated. If X={p1/q,…,pk/q}X = \set{p_1/q, \dots, p_k/q} with a common denominator qβ‰₯1q \ge 1, then every element of Sg⁑(X)\operatorname{Sg}(X) is an integer multiple of 1/q1/q, so 1/(2q)βˆ‰Sg⁑(X)1/(2q) \notin \operatorname{Sg}(X).

Every finite algebra is finitely generated, with X=AX = A. In model theory the same notion is used for structures in a signature with relation symbols, where the relations play no role in generation.

Each page uses the pages above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows how strong the evidence is, and the box also gives it as text. The list has the same pages.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
