Finitely generated variety
Builds on Variety of algebrasClass operators H S P
Definition
Let be a variety of algebras of a fixed signature. The variety is finitely generated if for some finite set of finite algebras. Here , and are the class operators of homomorphic images, subalgebras and direct products.
Remarks
If , then , so one finite algebra suffices. Example: the variety of abelian groups that satisfy the identity is generated by the finite group . Each such group is a direct sum of copies of and , and both of these are subgroups of . A direct sum is a subgroup of the direct product, so each such group lies in . Non-example: the variety of all abelian groups is not finitely generated. If is a finite abelian group with elements, then every group in satisfies the identity , while does not. Every finitely generated variety is a locally finite variety.
