Problem
Let be a complex manifold and let be an open cover of . For each , let be a meromorphic function on , such that is holomorphic on for all . Find a meromorphic function on such that is holomorphic on for every .
Remarks
The data are called Cousin I data; they prescribe the principal parts of . The differences form a Čech -cocycle with values in the sheaf of holomorphic functions. The problem is solvable for these data if and only if this cocycle is a coboundary, that is, for holomorphic on . Then on is a solution. So if , every first Cousin problem on is solvable. By Cartan's theorem B this holds on every Stein manifold, in particular on every domain of holomorphy in . For and a domain in , the problem is solved by the Mittag-Leffler theorem. It can fail on other domains: on , with , , and , there is no solution. Pierre Cousin studied the problem in 1895 for product domains in .
