Definition
Let be a field, let be a vector space of dimension over , and let be integers. A flag of type in is a chain of subspaces with . The flag variety is the set of these flags. It is a closed subvariety of the product of Grassmannians , so it is a projective variety. The full flag variety is the case .
Remarks
The group acts transitively on the flags of a given type, so the flag variety is a homogeneous space. The stabilizer of a full flag is a Borel subgroup, conjugate to the upper triangular matrices, so the full flag variety is .
General form: let be a connected reductive group over an algebraically closed field. A closed subgroup of is parabolic if it contains a Borel subgroup. The generalized flag variety is , a smooth projective homogeneous variety.
Example: for , the flag variety is the Grassmannian , and for it is the projective space .
Non-example: let be the diagonal torus of , the stabilizer of the pair of coordinate lines. The quotient is the space of ordered pairs of distinct lines in , which is minus its diagonal. It is not projective, since contains no Borel subgroup, and it is not a flag variety.
