Fourier–Motzkin elimination
Builds on Projection
Definition
Let a system of linear inequalities in real variables be given by with . Split the indices into , and . The Fourier–Motzkin elimination of from is the system in consisting of:
- the inequalities of with index in ;
- for each pair , the inequality obtained by adding times inequality to times inequality , so that cancels.
Remarks
The main property: satisfies if and only if there is such that satisfies . Indeed, inequalities in give upper bounds on and those in give lower bounds, and says exactly that each lower bound is at most each upper bound. So the solution set of is the projection of the solution set of forgetting .
Example: for , , , eliminating pairs (in ) with (in ) and gives . With from , the result is , the projection of the triangle onto the -axis.
Non-example: the method does not work for integer solutions. The system , with has the real solution , but no integer solution , while elimination of gives no condition that excludes .
The new system can have up to inequalities, at most when is empty, so repeated elimination can blow up quickly.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
