Definition
Let and let be the Fourier transform on , extended from by the Plancherel theorem. Let be a bounded measurable function. The Fourier multiplier with symbol is the operator given by
Remarks
By Plancherel, is a bounded linear operator on with operator norm equal to . It commutes with every translation, and conversely every bounded operator on that commutes with all translations is for a unique .
Example: on , the symbol is bounded, and is the Hilbert transform. Example: for , the symbol gives the heat semigroup: solves with , because acts on the Fourier side as multiplication by .
Non-example: the symbol on is not bounded; the corresponding operator is differentiation, which is not defined on all of . It is still a Fourier multiplier in the wider sense of an operator on the Schwartz space or on tempered distributions.
For the torus the same definition uses a bounded sequence that multiplies the Fourier coefficients. The symbol is called an multiplier when , restricted to , extends to a bounded operator on .
