Fredholm determinant
Definition
Let and let be a continuous kernel. For and points , let be the determinant of the matrix with entries . For let and let . The Fredholm determinant of is the function given by The series converges for every , so is an entire function.
Remarks
Example: for on , . For the matrix has rank at most , so its determinant is and . Hence .
Non-example: the definition does not apply when is only square-integrable, because the diagonal values enter and are not defined for an element of . For such kernels one uses a modified determinant in which the diagonal terms are removed.
The convergence for all follows from Hadamard's inequality: if , then . The coefficient is the integral , the trace of the kernel, and . For a degenerate kernel , one has , where .
