Fredholm equation of the first kind
Builds on Kernel of an integral equationFredholm integral equation
Definition
Let be real numbers. Let be a kernel, for example continuous or square-integrable, and let be a given function. Let denote an unknown function on . The Fredholm equation of the first kind with kernel and right-hand side is A solution is a function in the chosen function space for which the integral exists and the equality holds. In the equality is required for almost every , and otherwise for every .
Remarks
Example: on , take and . The constant function is a solution, because for every . It is not the only one: also works, since . With the same kernel and , there is no solution, since the left side is always a multiple of and vanishes at .
Non-example: the equation is not of the first kind, because also appears outside the integral; it is a Fredholm equation of the second kind.
The equation is a special Fredholm integral equation: the limits of integration are the fixed numbers and . In operator notation it reads , where .
