Fredholm equation of the second kind
Builds on Kernel of an integral equationFredholm integral equation
Definition
Let be real numbers. Let be a kernel, for example continuous or square-integrable. Let be a given function, and let be a parameter. Let denote an unknown function on . The Fredholm equation of the second kind with kernel , parameter and right-hand side is It is homogeneous when .
Remarks
Example: on , take , and . Then is a solution, since and .
Non-example: is not of the second kind, because does not appear outside the integral; it is a Fredholm equation of the first kind.
Some books write the equation as , where . Others put on the other side, as ; for the two forms are equivalent after dividing by .
