Definition

Let a<ba < b and let K ⁣:[a,b]×[a,b]→ℂK \colon [a, b] \times [a, b] \to \C be a continuous kernel. For points z1,…,zmz_1, \dots, z_m and w1,…,wmw_1, \dots, w_m of [a,b][a, b], write K(z1,…,zmw1,…,wm)=det⁡[K(zi,wj)]i,j=1m,K\begin{pmatrix} z_1, \dots, z_m \\ w_1, \dots, w_m \end{pmatrix} = \det[K(z_i, w_j)]_{i,j=1}^{m}, the determinant of the m×mm \times m matrix with entries K(zi,wj)K(z_i, w_j). Let n≥1n \ge 1, and let x1,…,xn,y1,…,yn∈[a,b]x_1, \dots, x_n, y_1, \dots, y_n \in [a, b]. The Fredholm minor of order nn of KK is the function Dn(x1,…,xny1,…,yn)(λ)=∑k=0∞(−λ)kk!∫ab⋯∫abK(x1,…,xn,t1,…,tky1,…,yn,t1,…,tk)dt1⋯dtkD_n\begin{pmatrix} x_1, \dots, x_n \\ y_1, \dots, y_n \end{pmatrix}(\lambda) = \sum_{k=0}^{\infty} \frac{(-\lambda)^k}{k!} \int_a^b \cdots \int_a^b K\begin{pmatrix} x_1, \dots, x_n, t_1, \dots, t_k \\ y_1, \dots, y_n, t_1, \dots, t_k \end{pmatrix} dt_1 \cdots dt_k of λ∈ℂ\lambda \in \C, where the term with k=0k = 0 is K(x1,…,xny1,…,yn)K\begin{pmatrix} x_1, \dots, x_n \\ y_1, \dots, y_n \end{pmatrix}. The minor of order 11 is the first minor, written D(x,y;λ)D(x, y; \lambda).

Remarks

The series converges for every λ\lambda, uniformly in the points, by Hadamard's bound on determinants. So each minor is an entire function of λ\lambda and a continuous function of the points. With n=0n = 0 the same formula gives the Fredholm determinant D(λ)D(\lambda).

Example: for K(x,y)=xyK(x, y) = xy on [0,1][0, 1], every matrix [ziwj][z_i w_j] of size at least 22 has rank 11, so its determinant is 00. Hence D(x,y;λ)=xyD(x, y; \lambda) = xy, and all minors of order n≥2n \ge 2 vanish identically.

Non-example: the series ∑k(−λ)kk!∫K(t1,…,tkt1,…,tk)dt\sum_k \frac{(-\lambda)^k}{k!} \int K\begin{pmatrix} t_1, \dots, t_k \\ t_1, \dots, t_k \end{pmatrix} dt, with no fixed points, is not a minor of order n≥1n \ge 1; it is the determinant D(λ)D(\lambda) itself.

Some authors put an extra factor λn\lambda^n in front of the minor of order nn; the formulas that involve the minors change accordingly.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
