Definition

Let kk be a commutative ring with identity and let XX be a set. Let X∗X^* be the free monoid on XX, with product given by concatenation. Its elements are the finite words x1x2⋯xnx_1 x_2 \cdots x_n with xi∈Xx_i \in X, including the empty word 11. The free algebra k⟨X⟩k\langle X \rangle is the free kk-module with basis X∗X^*, with the multiplication that extends concatenation of words kk-bilinearly: (∑uau u)(∑vbv v)=∑u,vaubv uv.\Big(\sum_{u} a_u \, u\Big)\Big(\sum_{v} b_v \, v\Big) = \sum_{u, v} a_u b_v \, uv. It is an associative algebra over kk with identity the empty word.

Remarks

Universal property: for every associative kk-algebra AA with identity and every map f ⁣:X→Af \colon X \to A, there is a unique homomorphism of kk-algebras fˉ ⁣:k⟨X⟩→A\bar f \colon k\langle X \rangle \to A with fˉ(x)=f(x)\bar f(x) = f(x) for x∈Xx \in X. It sends a word x1⋯xnx_1 \cdots x_n to f(x1)⋯f(xn)f(x_1) \cdots f(x_n).

Example: for X={x}X = \set{x}, the words are the powers xnx^n, and k⟨x⟩k\langle x \rangle is the polynomial ring k[x]k[x].

Non-example: for X={x,y}X = \set{x, y}, the polynomial ring k[x,y]k[x, y] is not free on XX. The map x↦e12x \mapsto e_{12}, y↦e21y \mapsto e_{21} into 2×22 \times 2 matrices over kk has no extension to a homomorphism from k[x,y]k[x, y], because e12e21=e11≠e22=e21e12e_{12} e_{21} = e_{11} \ne e_{22} = e_{21} e_{12} while xy=yxxy = yx in k[x,y]k[x, y].

The free algebra is the monoid ring k[X∗]k[X^*]. It is isomorphic to the tensor algebra T(V)T(V) of the free kk-module VV with basis XX, graded by word length. For ∣X∣≥2\abs{X} \ge 2 and kk a field, it is a domain that is not commutative.
