Definition
Let be a variety and let be a set. A free algebra of on is an algebra together with a map such that:
- is generated by .
- For every and every map , there is a homomorphism with .
It is written , and is called a set of free generators.
Remarks
Clause 1 makes the homomorphism in clause 2 unique, since two homomorphisms that agree on a generating set are equal. A free algebra on is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with . If contains an algebra with at least two elements, then is injective, and is usually regarded as a subset of . Example: in the variety of abelian groups, , the group of finitely supported functions , with the indicator function of . A map extends by , and this is a homomorphism. Non-example: with is not free on in abelian groups, since the map has no homomorphic extension . When the signature has no constants and empty algebras are excluded, one takes nonempty.
