Free distributive lattice
Builds on Distributive latticeLattice homomorphism
Definition
Let be a set. Let be a distributive lattice and let be a map. The pair is a free distributive lattice on if the following holds. For every distributive lattice and every map , there is exactly one lattice homomorphism with .
Remarks
It exists for every and is unique up to a unique isomorphism compatible with . For nonempty , every element of is a finite join of finite nonempty meets of generators . For finite with elements, is isomorphic to the lattice of non-constant monotone Boolean functions of variables, so it has elements, with the Dedekind number. If one also asks for and and homomorphisms that preserve them, the free bounded distributive lattice on generators has elements.
Example: on , the lattice with is free. A map into extends by and , and this is forced.
Non-example: the two-element chain with and is distributive and generated by the image of , but it is not free. The map , into the same chain would need a homomorphism sending to and to , which does not preserve the order.
