Example
Let be a set. The free magma on is defined inductively. Every is an element of , and if , then the formal product is an element of . Two elements are equal only when they are built in the same way. The binary operation is . So is a magma. Its elements are the fully parenthesised nonempty words in , or equivalently the binary trees with leaves labelled by .
It is an absolutely free algebra of the signature with one binary operation. Check: is generated by by construction. Given a magma and a map , define and by recursion on the construction. This is well defined because each element has exactly one construction, and it is the only homomorphism that extends . So is the free algebra on of the variety of all magmas.
For , the elements with three leaves are and , and they are different.
The number of elements with leaves is the Catalan number , the number of ways to bracket a product of factors.
In Mathlib the free magma is FreeMagma.
