Definition
Let be a field and let be a finite-dimensional associative algebra over with identity. The algebra is a Frobenius algebra if there is a bilinear form such that:
- is nondegenerate;
- for all .
Remarks
Example: the matrix algebra with . Clause 2 holds because both sides equal . Clause 1 holds because for the matrix unit , so forces . Another example is the group algebra of a finite group , with the coefficient of the identity element of in . Non-example: , with basis , is not Frobenius. If satisfies clause 2, then for the linear form . The plane spanned by and meets in some nonzero . Since for every , for all , and clause 1 fails. Equivalent forms: is Frobenius if and only if some linear form has a kernel that contains no nonzero left ideal. This holds if and only if as left -modules. If moreover is symmetric, is called a symmetric algebra.
