Fully nonlinear PDE

Definition
A partial differential equation of order is fully nonlinear if it is not quasilinear. That is, cannot be written as an affine function of the derivatives of order whose coefficients depend only on .
Remarks
Example: the Monge–Ampère equation in with is fully nonlinear of order . For it reads , which contains the product of two second derivatives. Non-example: the minimal surface equation is not fully nonlinear, because it is affine in the second derivatives with coefficients depending on only. For first-order equations, the eikonal equation is fully nonlinear.
