Functional
Builds on Vector spaceFunction
Definition
Let be or , and let be a vector space over . A functional on is a function . More generally, a functional on a subset is a function . In the calculus of variations, is usually a space of real functions, such as , and is real-valued.
Remarks
Example: on , the map is a real functional. It is not linear, since while a linear map would give . A functional that is linear is a linear form; when is normed, the continuous linear functionals form the dual space . Non-example: the map on takes values in , not in , so it is an operator and not a functional. Some authors restrict the word to linear functionals; in the calculus of variations it means any scalar-valued map as above.
