Definition
Let be a group with identity , and let be a set. A functional equation on is a functional equation for one or more unknown functions in which:
- the variables range over all of ;
- each unknown function is evaluated at words in , their inverses and fixed elements of ;
- the two sides of the equation are combined from these values by fixed operations on .
A solution is a tuple for which the equation holds for all .
Remarks
Example: for a group and , the equation is d'Alembert's equation on . It has the solution for every homomorphism , as a direct expansion shows. Non-example: the equation for does not fit the definition. There the unknown function is evaluated at a value of itself, not at a word in the variables, so it is an iterative equation. For , this setting includes the classical equations of Cauchy, d'Alembert and Pexider, and Jensen's equation in the equivalent form . Solutions on are often required to be continuous or measurable when is a topological group.
