Functional square root

Builds on FunctionIterative root

Definition

Let XX be a set and let f ⁣:X→Xf \colon X \to X be a function. A functional square root of ff is a function g ⁣:X→Xg \colon X \to X such that g(g(x))=f(x)for all x∈X.g(g(x)) = f(x) \quad \text{for all } x \in X. So it is an iterative root of order 22 of ff.

Remarks

Example: on X=(0,∞)X = (0, \infty), let f(x)=x1+2xf(x) = \frac{x}{1 + 2x} and g(x)=x1+xg(x) = \frac{x}{1 + x}. Check: g(g(x))=x/(1+x)1+x/(1+x)=x1+2x=f(x)g(g(x)) = \frac{x/(1+x)}{1 + x/(1+x)} = \frac{x}{1 + 2x} = f(x).

Non-example: g(x)=x2g(x) = \frac{x}{2} is not a functional square root of f(x)=x2f(x) = \frac{x}{2}, since g(g(x))=x4≠x2g(g(x)) = \frac{x}{4} \ne \frac{x}{2} for x≠0x \ne 0.

Common notations are g=f1/2g = f^{1/2} and g=f[1/2]g = f^{[1/2]}; the notation hides the fact that roots are not unique. For instance x↦π−xx \mapsto \pi - x and x↦xx \mapsto x are both functional square roots of the identity of ℝ\R.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
