Definition

Let ๐’ž\mathcal{C} be a small category and let ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} be a category. The functor category [๐’ž,๐’Ÿ][\mathcal{C}, \mathcal{D}] is defined as follows:

  1. its objects are the functors ๐’žโ†’๐’Ÿ\mathcal{C} \to \mathcal{D};
  2. its morphisms Fโ†’GF \to G are the natural transformations ฮฑโ€‰โฃ:Fโ‡’G\alpha \colon F \Rightarrow G;
  3. the composite of ฮฑโ€‰โฃ:Fโ‡’G\alpha \colon F \Rightarrow G and ฮฒโ€‰โฃ:Gโ‡’H\beta \colon G \Rightarrow H is ฮฒโˆ˜ฮฑ\beta \circ \alpha with components (ฮฒโˆ˜ฮฑ)A=ฮฒAโˆ˜ฮฑA(\beta \circ \alpha)_A = \beta_A \circ \alpha_A, and the identity of FF has components 1F(A)1_{F(A)}.

Remarks

The composite ฮฒโˆ˜ฮฑ\beta \circ \alpha is natural, because both of its naturality squares can be pasted together. It is also written ๐’Ÿ๐’ž\mathcal{D}^{\mathcal{C}} or Fun(๐’ž,๐’Ÿ)\mathrm{Fun}(\mathcal{C}, \mathcal{D}). Smallness of ๐’ž\mathcal{C} ensures that, when ๐’Ÿ\mathcal{D} is locally small, the natural transformations between two functors form a set. Example: let GG be a group, seen as a category with one object โˆ—\ast and with the elements of GG as morphisms. A functor Gโ†’๐’๐ž๐ญG \to \mathbf{Set} is a set X=F(โˆ—)X = F(\ast) with a group action gโ‹…x=F(g)(x)g \cdot x = F(g)(x), and a natural transformation is a map hh with h(gโ‹…x)=gโ‹…h(x)h(g \cdot x) = g \cdot h(x). So [G,๐’๐ž๐ญ][G, \mathbf{Set}] is the category of GG-sets. Non-example: a family of morphisms ฮฑAโ€‰โฃ:F(A)โ†’G(A)\alpha_A \colon F(A) \to G(A) that fails one naturality square is not a morphism of [๐’ž,๐’Ÿ][\mathcal{C}, \mathcal{D}]. A morphism of [๐’ž,๐’Ÿ][\mathcal{C}, \mathcal{D}] is an isomorphism exactly when all its components are isomorphisms.
