Funk transform
Definition
Let be the unit sphere. For , let be the great circle with pole , with its arc length measure . Let be continuous. The Funk transform of is the function on given by
Remarks
Since , is even. If is odd, , then , because is symmetric under . On a spherical harmonic of degree , , where is the Legendre polynomial; for odd and for even . Hence is injective on even continuous functions.
Example: gives , the length of a great circle; this is the case , with .
Example: is odd, so , although .
Non-example: the integral of over a small circle with is not a value of the Funk transform, which uses only circles through the center of the sphere.
The same definition works on with the great subspheres .
