Definition

Let d≥1d \ge 1 and n≥d+1n \ge d + 1, and let v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n be points of ℝd\R^d whose affine span is ℝd\R^d. Let AA be the (d+1)×n(d+1) \times n matrix whose ii-th column is (vi,1)∈ℝd+1(v_i, 1) \in \R^{d+1}. Its null space N={λ∈ℝn:Aλ=0}N = \set{\lambda \in \R^n : A \lambda = 0}, the space of affine dependences of the points, has dimension n−d−1n - d - 1. Choose a basis of NN and let BB be the n×(n−d−1)n \times (n - d - 1) matrix with these basis vectors as columns. The Gale transform of v1,…,vnv_1, \dots, v_n is the sequence g1,…,gn∈ℝn−d−1g_1, \dots, g_n \in \R^{n-d-1} of rows of BB.

Remarks

The Gale transform is determined up to an invertible linear map of ℝn−d−1\R^{n-d-1}, the change of basis of NN. Many authors call the configuration g1,…,gng_1, \dots, g_n a Gale diagram, and some first rescale each nonzero gig_i by a positive factor; this does not affect the property below.

Key property: let T⊆{1,…,n}T \subseteq \set{1, \dots, n} be nonempty and SS its complement. Consider an affine function ℓ\ell on ℝd\R^d with ℓ(vi)=0\ell(v_i) = 0 for i∈Si \in S and ℓ(vi)>0\ell(v_i) > 0 for i∈Ti \in T. Such an ℓ\ell exists if and only if 00 lies in the relative interior of the convex hull of {gi:i∈T}\set{g_i : i \in T}. Indeed, the vectors (ℓ(v1),…,ℓ(vn))(\ell(v_1), \dots, \ell(v_n)) are exactly the vectors yy with ∑iyigi=0\sum_i y_i g_i = 0. So when the viv_i are the vertices of a convex polytope PP, the sets {vi:i∈S}\set{v_i : i \in S} that are vertex sets of faces of PP are read off from the gig_i.

Example: for the 44 vertices 0,e1,e2,e1+e20, e_1, e_2, e_1 + e_2 of a square in ℝ2\R^2, n−d−1=1n - d - 1 = 1, and NN is spanned by (1,−1,−1,1)(1, -1, -1, 1). So the Gale transform is 1,−1,−1,11, -1, -1, 1 in ℝ\R. For T={1,4}T = \set{1, 4}, the hull of g1=g4=1g_1 = g_4 = 1 is {1}\set{1}, which misses 00, so {e1,e2}\set{e_1, e_2} is not a face: it is a diagonal. For T={1,2}T = \set{1, 2}, the hull of 11 and −1-1 contains 00 in its interior, so {e2,e1+e2}\set{e_2, e_1 + e_2} is an edge.

Non-example: the points 0,e1,2e10, e_1, 2e_1 in ℝ2\R^2 do not span ℝ2\R^2 affinely, so the construction does not apply.
