Definition

Let π’ž\mathcal{C} be a category and let F ⁣:π’žβ†’π…π’π§π’πžπF \colon \mathcal{C} \to \mathbf{FinSet} be a functor to the category of finite sets. Let q ⁣:Yβ†’Xq \colon Y \to X be a morphism of π’ž\mathcal{C} such that the pullback YΓ—XYY \times_X Y exists. The morphism qq is a strict epimorphism when it is the coequalizer of the two projections YΓ—XYβ†’YY \times_X Y \to Y, its kernel pair. The pair (π’ž,F)(\mathcal{C}, F) is a Galois category, and FF is a fibre functor, when these axioms hold:

  1. π’ž\mathcal{C} has a terminal object and all fibre products.
  2. π’ž\mathcal{C} has finite coproducts, in particular an initial object, and for each object XX and each finite subgroup GG of Aut⁑(X)\Aut(X) the quotient X/GX/G exists.
  3. Each morphism u ⁣:Yβ†’Xu \colon Y \to X factors as u=uβ€²βˆ˜uβ€²β€²u = u' \circ u'' with uβ€²β€²u'' a strict epimorphism and uβ€²u' a monomorphism. Moreover, each monomorphism Yβ†’XY \to X is an isomorphism of YY onto a direct summand of XX, that is, onto a coproduct component.
  4. FF sends a terminal object to a terminal object and preserves fibre products.
  5. FF preserves finite coproducts, sends strict epimorphisms to surjections, and preserves quotients by finite groups of automorphisms.
  6. If uu is a morphism of π’ž\mathcal{C} and F(u)F(u) is a bijection, then uu is an isomorphism.

Remarks

Here X/GX/G means the coequalizer of the family of maps g ⁣:Xβ†’Xg \colon X \to X, g∈Gg \in G. Example: for a profinite group Ο€\pi, the category of finite sets with a continuous action of Ο€\pi, with FF the functor that forgets the action, satisfies all six axioms. Main theorem: for every Galois category (π’ž,F)(\mathcal{C}, F), the group Ο€=Aut⁑(F)\pi = \Aut(F) is profinite and FF induces an equivalence of π’ž\mathcal{C} with finite continuous Ο€\pi-sets. Non-example: the category of all finite sets with FF the functor that doubles each set, F(X)=XβŠ”XF(X) = X \sqcup X, fails axiom 4, since it sends the one-point set to a two-point set. The axioms follow Grothendieck's SGA 1; for a field kk, finite Γ©tale kk-algebras with arrows reversed form a Galois category whose group is the absolute Galois group of kk.
