Gegenbauer polynomials
Builds on Generating function
Definition
Let be a real number with . The Gegenbauer polynomials , , are the polynomials defined by the generating function valid for and .
Remarks
Equivalently, , and for . Example: . Check: with , the expansion has -coefficient . They are orthogonal: for . Special cases: is the Legendre polynomial , and is the Chebyshev polynomial of the second kind . Non-example: is excluded, because the generating function is then the constant and gives for all .
