Gelfand's problem on the index

Builds on Analytic indexElliptic operator on a compact manifold

Problem

Let MM be a closed smooth manifold and let PP be an elliptic differential operator between vector bundles over MM. The analytic index ind⁡P=dim⁡ker⁡P−dim⁡coker⁡P\operatorname{ind} P = \dim \ker P - \dim \operatorname{coker} P is unchanged under continuous deformations of PP through elliptic operators. Find a formula for ind⁡P\operatorname{ind} P in terms of topological invariants of MM and of the principal symbol of PP.

Remarks

Gelfand raised the question in an article on elliptic equations published in 1960. Atiyah and Singer solved it with their index theorem, announced in 1963: the analytic index equals the topological index. Earlier special cases were known, such as the Riemann–Roch theorem for curves and its generalization by Hirzebruch, and the Hirzebruch signature theorem.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
