Definition
Let . A general linear model is a statistical model for a random response matrix of the form where:
- is a known real matrix, the design matrix;
- is an unknown real matrix of coefficients;
- is a random error matrix whose rows are independent with expected value and a common covariance matrix .
Often the rows of are assumed to follow the multivariate normal distribution .
Remarks
With , the model is , multiple linear regression, and is a single variance.
Example: the comparison of two group means. Let observations belong to group and the others to group , and let have two columns: the indicator of group and the indicator of group . Then , and the model says that has mean or according to its group, with a common error variance. This is the model of the two-sample -test.
Non-example: the model is not a general linear model. Its mean is not a linear function of , so it cannot be written as the -th entry of .
When has rank , the least squares estimate is , computed column by column.
