Definition
Let be a category. An object of is a generator (or separator) if it has the following property. For all morphisms with , there is a morphism with . More generally, a set of objects is a generating family if for all there are and with .
Remarks
When is locally small, is a generator exactly when the hom functor is faithful. The dual notion is a cogenerator (or coseparator): an object such that implies for some .
Example: in the category of abelian groups, is a generator. If , pick with and let be ; then .
Non-example: in the same category, the trivial group is not a generator. The identity and the zero map of differ, but the only morphism is zero, and both composites with are zero.
