Definition

Let VV be a finite-dimensional real vector space with a nondegenerate symmetric bilinear form u⋅vu \cdot v. The geometric algebra 𝒢(V)\mathcal{G}(V) is the Clifford algebra of VV for the quadratic form Q(v)=v⋅vQ(v) = v \cdot v. So it is the associative unital real algebra generated by VV subject to vv=v⋅vv v = v \cdot v for all v∈Vv \in V. Its product is the geometric product. For vectors u,v∈Vu, v \in V, the outer product is u∧v=12(uv−vu)u \wedge v = \tfrac{1}{2}(uv - vu), and then uv=u⋅v+u∧vuv = u \cdot v + u \wedge v. An element of 𝒢(V)\mathcal{G}(V) is a multivector. A product of kk pairwise orthogonal vectors is a kk-blade, and the span of the kk-blades is the grade kk part 𝒢k(V)\mathcal{G}^k(V).

Remarks

Polarizing vv=v⋅vv v = v \cdot v gives uv+vu=2 u⋅vuv + vu = 2\, u \cdot v, which is why u⋅v=12(uv+vu)u \cdot v = \tfrac{1}{2}(uv + vu). As a graded vector space, 𝒢(V)=⨁k=0n𝒢k(V)\mathcal{G}(V) = \bigoplus_{k=0}^{n} \mathcal{G}^k(V) is isomorphic to the exterior algebra ΛV\Lambda V, of dimension 2n2^n for n=dim⁡Vn = \dim V. Example: V=ℝ2V = \R^2 with the dot product and orthonormal basis e1,e2e_1, e_2. Then e1e2=−e2e1e_1 e_2 = -e_2 e_1, and I=e1e2I = e_1 e_2 satisfies I2=e1e2e1e2=−e1e1e2e2=−1I^2 = e_1 e_2 e_1 e_2 = -e_1 e_1 e_2 e_2 = -1, so {a+bI}\set{a + bI} is a copy of ℂ\C. With R=cos⁡(θ/2)−Isin⁡(θ/2)R = \cos(\theta/2) - I \sin(\theta/2) and R~=cos⁡(θ/2)+Isin⁡(θ/2)\tilde R = \cos(\theta/2) + I \sin(\theta/2), one checks Re1R~=e1(cos⁡θ+Isin⁡θ)=cos⁡θ e1+sin⁡θ e2R e_1 \tilde R = e_1 (\cos \theta + I \sin \theta) = \cos\theta \, e_1 + \sin\theta \, e_2, a rotation by θ\theta. Non-example: the exterior algebra ΛV\Lambda V with the wedge product alone is not a geometric algebra in this sense, because there v∧v=0v \wedge v = 0 for every vv, while vv=v⋅v≠0v v = v \cdot v \ne 0 for a non-null vector. The notation 𝒢(p,q)\mathcal{G}(p, q) or Clp,q(ℝ)\mathrm{Cl}_{p,q}(\R) is used when the form has pp positive and qq negative squares.
