Definition
Let be open, let be smooth, and let be the flow of the equation . Let be a property of maps that every has. Standard choices of are:
- symplecticity, when the equation is a Hamiltonian system;
- the conservation of a given first integral , that is, ;
- the preservation of volume, when has divergence zero;
- reversibility with respect to a linear involution , that is, , when .
Let be a one-step numerical method with step size . It is a geometric integrator for if has the property for every equation of the class and every small enough .
Remarks
Example: take the harmonic oscillator , . The symplectic Euler method , is the linear map Its determinant is , and in dimension this means that the map is symplectic. So the method is a geometric integrator for property 1. Non-example: the explicit Euler method , has matrix determinant , so it is not symplectic for any . A method may be geometric for one property and not another. The implicit midpoint rule is symplectic and conserves all quadratic first integrals. But no Runge–Kutta method conserves all polynomial first integrals of degree or more.
