Definition
Let be a smooth manifold and let . Consider pairs , where is an open neighbourhood of and is a smooth function. Two pairs and are equivalent if there is an open neighbourhood of with on . The germ at of is its equivalence class, written . This is the germ of at in the general sense, for smooth real functions.
The set of germs at is written or . Sums and products of germs are defined by and , with and taken on .
Remarks
With these operations is a commutative -algebra. It is a local ring: its unique maximal ideal consists of the germs with . Indeed, if , then on a neighbourhood of and is an inverse of . The value and all partial derivatives of at in a chart depend only on the germ.
Example: on , let on and on . They agree on , so .
Non-example: let on , and let for with . All derivatives of and at agree, but for every . So and agree on no neighbourhood of , and . A germ is thus finer information than the Taylor series at .
