Definition
Let be a field. Let be a graded associative algebra over that is graded commutative: for homogeneous of degrees . A Gerstenhaber algebra is such an with a bilinear bracket such that, for homogeneous :
- ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
Clauses 1 and 2 say that becomes a graded Lie algebra when each element of is given the degree . Clause 3 says that is a derivation of the product of degree . Example: the polyvector fields on a smooth manifold , with the wedge product and the Schouten–Nijenhuis bracket. Example: Gerstenhaber proved that the Hochschild cohomology of an associative algebra is a Gerstenhaber algebra, with the cup product and the Gerstenhaber bracket. Non-example: let have basis with , put it in degree of , and set the bracket to zero on all other degrees. Then , while clause 3 asks for , so clause 3 fails.
