Godunov's scheme
Builds on Conservation lawRiemann problemHyperbolic conservation law
Definition
Let be a hyperbolic system of conservation laws with smooth. Fix , put , and let the cells be with . Let bound the absolute values of the eigenvalues of on the relevant states, and assume . Given cell values , Godunov's scheme computes as follows.
- Let be the function equal to on for each .
- Let be the entropy solution on with , made of the solutions of the Riemann problems at the points .
- Set .
Remarks
Let be the value at of the Riemann solution with states . Integrating the equation over gives the conservation form In this form the scheme only needs . For a scalar law the numerical flux is if , and if .
Example: for with , the Riemann solution at is . So the flux at is , and the scheme is the upwind scheme .
Non-example: the downwind scheme uses the flux instead. This is not the Riemann solution value, and the scheme is unstable for every when .
