Gram matrix

Builds on Inner product

Definition

Let VV be an inner product space over ℝ\R or ℂ\C, and let v1,…,vk∈Vv_1, \dots, v_k \in V. The Gram matrix of v1,…,vkv_1, \dots, v_k is the k×kk \times k matrix GG with entries Gij=⟨vi,vj⟩(1≤i,j≤k),G_{ij} = \langle v_i, v_j \rangle \qquad (1 \le i, j \le k), where ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\langle \cdot, \cdot \rangle is the inner product.

Remarks

The Gram matrix is Hermitian and positive semidefinite. It is invertible if and only if v1,…,vkv_1, \dots, v_k are linearly independent. For real column vectors vi∈ℝnv_i \in \R^n with the dot product, G=ATAG = A^T A, where AA has the columns v1,…,vkv_1, \dots, v_k. Its determinant is the square of the kk-dimensional volume of the parallelepiped spanned by the viv_i.

What this page needs for W2

  • edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
  • edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
