Group ring
Definition
Let be a ring with identity and let be a group. The group ring is the set of functions such that for only finitely many . Write such a function as a finite formal sum with . Addition is termwise, and multiplication is
Remarks
With these operations is a ring with identity , where is the identity of . The maps and embed as a subring and, when , into the group of units of . If is commutative, is an algebra over , and if is a field, it is the group algebra.
Example: let be infinite cyclic. A finite sum is a Laurent polynomial, and the product formula is the usual product of Laurent polynomials, so .
Non-example: for infinite , the set of all functions with the same product formula is not a ring in general. For and , the coefficient of in would be the infinite sum , which is not defined in .
If has an element of finite order , then , so has zero divisors when . The group ring is the monoid ring of over .
