Hamiltonian of an optimal control problem
Builds on Optimal controlControl system
Definition
Let be a nonempty set and an interval. Consider an optimal control problem with control system and running cost , where and . The Hamiltonian of the problem is the function given by The vector is the costate, and the number is the cost multiplier. In the normal case one writes .
Remarks
Example: for in with running cost , the normal Hamiltonian is . For fixed it is a concave function of with maximum at . The state equation is recovered as . Many texts use the opposite sign convention , under which optimal controls minimize ; this gives the minimum principle. The two conventions differ by the change and an overall sign. A non-example is the Lagrangian alone: it does not involve the costate, so it does not carry the dynamics.
