Definition

Let ν∈ℂ\nu \in \C, and let JνJ_\nu and YνY_\nu be the Bessel functions of the first kind and of the second kind on ℂ∖(−∞,0]\C \setminus (-\infty, 0]. The Hankel functions of order ν\nu are Hν(1)(z)=Jν(z)+i Yν(z),Hν(2)(z)=Jν(z)−i Yν(z).H^{(1)}_\nu(z) = J_\nu(z) + i\, Y_\nu(z), \qquad H^{(2)}_\nu(z) = J_\nu(z) - i\, Y_\nu(z).

Remarks

Both functions solve Bessel's equation z2y′′+zy′+(z2−ν2)y=0z^2 y'' + z y' + (z^2 - \nu^2) y = 0, since they are linear combinations of JνJ_\nu and YνY_\nu. They are independent: their Wronskian is W(Hν(1),Hν(2))(z)=−4iπzW(H^{(1)}_\nu, H^{(2)}_\nu)(z) = -\frac{4i}{\pi z}. Example: for ν=12\nu = \frac{1}{2} and x>0x > 0, J1/2(x)=2πxsin⁡xJ_{1/2}(x) = \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \sin x and Y1/2(x)=−2πxcos⁡xY_{1/2}(x) = -\sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}} \cos x, so H1/2(1)(x)=−i2πx eixH^{(1)}_{1/2}(x) = -i \sqrt{\frac{2}{\pi x}}\, e^{ix}. For real ν\nu and x>0x > 0, Hν(2)(x)H^{(2)}_\nu(x) is the complex conjugate of Hν(1)(x)H^{(1)}_\nu(x). A non-example: Jν+YνJ_\nu + Y_\nu also solves Bessel's equation, but it is not a Hankel function, because the coefficient of YνY_\nu is not ±i\pm i. They are also called Bessel functions of the third kind.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
