Definition
Let be a random variable with values in that has a probability density function , and let be its survival function. The hazard function of is defined for all with by The cumulative hazard function is .
Remarks
At every point where is continuous, the hazard is the limit of a conditional probability per unit time: Since there, one gets , so determines the distribution of .
Example: for the exponential distribution with rate , and , so is constant and . For the Weibull distribution with shape and scale , and , which increases when and decreases when .
Non-example: if takes only the values and , each with probability , then has no density and the formula does not apply. For discrete times one uses instead the discrete hazard , here at and at .
