Definition
Let , and let be the fundamental solution of the heat equation : Let be a positive Radon measure on . The heat potential of is the function given by When for a function , the heat potential is also called the volume potential of .
Remarks
Only the part of with contributes to , since vanishes for nonpositive times. Example: for the unit point mass , the heat potential is itself, the heat kernel started at time ; it solves the heat equation away from . Degenerate case: for Lebesgue measure on , at every point, so finiteness of a heat potential needs growth conditions on . For a bounded function on that is locally Hölder continuous, the function solves with . A measure carried by the lateral boundary of a space-time cylinder gives a single layer heat potential. Using a normal derivative of instead gives a double layer heat potential. Both are used to solve boundary value problems for the heat equation.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
