Definition
Let be the Heaviside step function, and consider functions of that vanish for . The Heaviside operational calculus is the formal method that works with the following conventions.
- The differentiation operator is written , and means integration from : .
- For each integer , .
- Consider a system governed by a linear differential equation with constant coefficients, at rest before . Replace by and solve the equation algebraically for . The response to the input is then written with a rational function .
- is evaluated by expanding in powers of and applying rule 2 term by term, or by the expansion theorem.
Remarks
In modern terms, is the function whose Laplace transform is , and rule 2 says that . For rational that is bounded at infinity, the series in rule 4 converges for all and the method is correct. Heaviside also applied the rules to non-rational expressions such as , where they need a separate justification.
Example: , with for . Rule 3 gives , so for . Check: and .
Non-example: the rules do not apply to an equation with variable coefficients such as . There does not commute with multiplication by , so the equation cannot be solved for as .
