Definition

This is the Iwahori–Hecke algebra. Let (W,S)(W, S) be a Coxeter system, with Coxeter matrix (mst)s,t∈S(m_{st})_{s,t \in S}, so that mstm_{st} is the order of stst in WW. Let RR be a commutative ring with identity and let q∈Rq \in R. The Hecke algebra Hq(W)H_q(W) is the associative algebra over RR generated by elements TsT_s for s∈Ss \in S, subject to the relations:

  1. (Ts−q)(Ts+1)=0(T_s - q)(T_s + 1) = 0 for every s∈Ss \in S.
  2. TsTtTs⋯=TtTsTt⋯T_s T_t T_s \cdots = T_t T_s T_t \cdots, with mstm_{st} factors on each side, for all s≠ts \ne t in SS with mst<∞m_{st} < \infty.

Remarks

For w∈Ww \in W with a reduced expression w=s1⋯skw = s_1 \cdots s_k, put Tw=Ts1⋯TskT_w = T_{s_1} \cdots T_{s_k}. By the braid relations and Matsumoto's theorem TwT_w does not depend on the reduced expression, and the TwT_w for w∈Ww \in W form a basis of Hq(W)H_q(W) as a free RR-module. The multiplication is TsTw=TswT_s T_w = T_{sw} if ℓ(sw)>ℓ(w)\ell(sw) > \ell(w) and TsTw=(q−1)Tw+qTswT_s T_w = (q - 1) T_w + q T_{sw} if ℓ(sw)<ℓ(w)\ell(sw) < \ell(w), where ℓ\ell is the length function. At q=1q = 1 the relations become Ts2=1T_s^2 = 1 and the braid relations, which present the group algebra R[W]R[W]. Example: W={1,s}W = \set{1, s} of order 22 gives Hq(W)=R[T]/((T−q)(T+1))H_q(W) = R[T]/((T - q)(T + 1)), free of rank 22 with basis 1,T1, T. Non-example: for W=S3W = S_3 with S={s,t}S = \set{s, t} and mst=3m_{st} = 3, dropping relation 2 changes the algebra. At q=1q = 1 the result is the group algebra of the infinite dihedral group ⟨s,t∣s2=t2=1⟩\langle s, t \mid s^2 = t^2 = 1 \rangle, which has infinite rank, while H1(S3)=R[S3]H_1(S_3) = R[S_3] has rank 66. Many authors use the parameter q1/2q^{1/2} or vv with q=v2q = v^2 and rescale the generators.
