Heilbronn triangle problem
Builds on TriangleBig O notation
Problem
Let and let be a set of points in the unit square . Let be the smallest area of a triangle whose vertices are three points of . Three collinear points count as a triangle of area . Let be the supremum of over all such . Determine the order of growth of as .
Remarks
Hans Heilbronn conjectured that , with the big O notation; the problem first appeared in print in a 1951 paper of Klaus Roth. Erdős showed for a constant , so would be the right order. Komlós, Pintz and Szemerédi disproved the conjecture in 1982 by showing . On the other side, Roth proved , and Komlós, Pintz and Szemerédi proved in 1981. In 2023 Cohen, Pohoata and Zakharov improved the exponent for the first time. The exact order of growth remains open.
