Definition
Let be a rational function of degree at least . A Herman ring of is a component of the Fatou set of with the following properties.
- There is with .
- There are and a conformal map from onto the round annulus .
- There is an irrational number with for all .
Remarks
The circles with pull back to invariant closed curves of in . Non-example: a polynomial has no Herman ring. If were one, an invariant curve in would bound a disc , and by the maximum principle the iterates of would be bounded on . Then would lie in the Fatou set, so could not be a component of it with a hole. Herman constructed the first examples of rational maps with Herman rings. Shishikura later built them by quasiconformal surgery from maps with Siegel discs.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
