Hermite interpolation
Builds on Polynomial interpolationDerivativeDegree of a polynomialMultiplicity of a root
Definition
Let , let be pairwise distinct, and let be integers with . For each and each let a real number be given. The Hermite interpolation polynomial of these data is the polynomial with real coefficients such that:
- or ;
- for all and , where is the -th derivative.
Remarks
Such a exists and is unique. Uniqueness: the difference of two solutions is or has degree at most . It has a root of multiplicity at least at each , so at least roots counted with multiplicity, and hence . Existence follows because the conditions form a square linear system whose only solution for zero data is . If all this is polynomial interpolation; if the solution is the Taylor polynomial of order at .
Example: , nodes and , , data , , , . Then and : indeed , gives , and .
Non-example: satisfies clause 2 for the same data, since the added term has double roots at and , but its degree is , so clause 1 fails.
The conditions must cover consecutive derivative orders at each node; dropping this gives Birkhoff interpolation, where uniqueness can fail.
