Definition

Let XX be a smooth manifold and let E→XE \to X be a smooth complex vector bundle. A Hermitian metric on EE is a family h=(hx)x∈Xh = (h_x)_{x \in X} such that:

  1. For each x∈Xx \in X, hx ⁣:Ex×Ex→ℂh_x \colon E_x \times E_x \to \C is a Hermitian inner product on the fibre ExE_x. So it is ℂ\C-linear in the first argument, hx(w,v)=hx(v,w)‾h_x(w, v) = \overline{h_x(v, w)}, and hx(v,v)>0h_x(v, v) > 0 for v≠0v \ne 0.
  2. For any two smooth local sections s,ts, t of EE over an open set UU, the function x↦hx(s(x),t(x))x \mapsto h_x(s(x), t(x)) is smooth on UU.

Remarks

In a local frame e1,…,ere_1, \dots, e_r of EE over UU, a Hermitian metric is the same as a smooth map H=(h(ej,ei))i,jH = (h(e_j, e_i))_{i,j} from UU to the positive definite Hermitian r×rr \times r matrices. A vector bundle with a Hermitian metric is called a Hermitian vector bundle. When XX is a complex manifold and EE is its holomorphic tangent bundle, a Hermitian metric on EE is a Hermitian metric on XX in the sense of Hermitian manifolds.

Example: on 𝒪(−1)⊂ℙn×ℂn+1\mathcal{O}(-1) \subset \mathbb{P}^n \times \C^{n+1}, restrict the standard inner product ∑kvkwˉk\sum_k v_k \bar w_k of ℂn+1\C^{n+1} to each fibre. Each restriction is a Hermitian inner product, and for a local holomorphic section such as s(z)=(1,z1,…,zn)s(z) = (1, z_1, \dots, z_n) on {z0≠0}\set{z_0 \ne 0} one gets h(s,s)=1+∣z1∣2+⋯+∣zn∣2h(s, s) = 1 + \abs{z_1}^2 + \cdots + \abs{z_n}^2, which is smooth.

Non-example: on the trivial line bundle ℂ×ℂ→ℂ\C \times \C \to \C, the rule hz(v,w)=∣z∣2vwˉh_z(v, w) = \abs{z}^2 v \bar w is smooth, but h0(v,v)=0h_0(v, v) = 0 for all vv, so clause 1 fails at z=0z = 0.
